We need better IEPs,
not weaker ones!!
by Dolores M. Smith SThedee@aol.com
My son was diagnosed in 1996 with ADHD
and OCD. In 2001, he was also diagnosed with Epilepsy and Autism. At that time,
his IEP was thrown out despite my concerns. He has since been without supports
and the schools are "pushing him through" each grade. I have been fighting to
get him an IEP without success. We cannot weaken the laws. Without the
short-term goals, he will continue to flounder and may not succeed in spite of
his very high IQ. The school will continue to push him through all the while,
complaining that he doesn't turn in his work and is disorganized. I've given up
my career and schooling to help him because the school is not doing their job!
How can the director of Special Education say the changes will lessen our burden
as parents?! Without the short-term goals, my job is harder. It is a full-time
job to keep him organized and get him to help outside the school because they do
not help him despite his 4 qualifying diagnoses. We even moved at the beginning
of the school year because of an assault at the old school. My son was
brutilized and nothing was done to the children who beat him to unconsciousness
and beyond. We need better IEPs, not weaker ones!!
