The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), was designed to ensure our children with special needs receive a free and appropriate education. These children have the same opportunity to become productive citizens and contributing members to society as do their typically developing peers. We need to open the doors for them. It is critical that we become familiar with the laws governing our children’s education so that we may take an active role in advocating for our children’s educational needs. We need to challenge our children to the meet their greatest potential and increase their level of independence. Ms. Bunn, a special education lawyer and parent of a child with special needs, will provide an overview of the legislation and changes that have occurred in the past year.

Bob Witanek, initiator and coordinator of the statewide petition to uphold student and parent rights under NJ code revisions, webmaster of The Student Advocate Website ( http://StudentAdvocate-NJ.org ) and editor of The New Jersey Student Advocate paper will address the issue of what parents and supporters need to be doing NOW to preserve important student rights and protections like short term objectives, mid year progress reports, stay put provisions and other important safeguards of our children.  A letter writing workshop will be part of the event.

Please RSVP Barbara (732) 671-8416 or tdaugusta@comcast.net
