Presentations by education and student advocates and organizers.

On May 26, the NJ IDEIA 2004 Organizing Committee was formed at a meeting attended by 14 parents and advocates.  The group will meet again on June 23 to assess progress since the first meeting and plan activities for the following month.

Topics:

Brief IDEIA 2004 Update for those who did not attend earlier meetings on the topic.

Petition Drive in Motion with 750 Signatures and Counting . . . . to stand up and be counted, click here:

http://studentadvocate-nj.org/IDEIA2004_Petition.htm

We have nearly 800 signatures on the petition to protect the rights of children with disabilities and their parents.  We need to develop a strategy to move the petition base from counting by the hundreds into counting by the thousands.  Let’s organize all 215,000 NJ special needs families!

The petition drive was initiated and has been largely coordinated by APIECE.  The NJ IDEIA 2004 Organizing Committee has been formed to move the effort forward.

Activating the Petitioner Base:

Those who sign the petition at the website are also volunteering for various tasks including letter writing, further promotion of the petition, to solicit support from their organization etc.  A mechanism of phone bankers is needed to organized follow up calls to petitioners to assure that they are following through on their tasks and to see what other efforts they might be willing to support.  Ideally we would call the petitioners once a month or every other month.  The calls would be brief – unless you decide to talk longer – and the amount of time requested for phone banking would be minimal.  The follow up with petitioners needs to be organized.

Other petition tasks:

A means to organize outreach to media, organizations, potential signers, etc. to more thoroughly communicate to the whole state of special needs families about the need to struggle around these issues is needed.  We will discuss and brainstorm how to organize and coordinate the statewide effort.

PLEASE RSVP BY E-MAILING ADVOCATE@STUDENTADVOCATE-NJ.ORG or calling 908-881-5275

Driving Directions:
The Mary Jacobs Library is located on Route 518 (Washington St) in Rocky Hill, one third of a mile from the intersection of Routes 206 and 518. From Somerville, go south on Route 206 about 12 miles and turn left onto Route 518. The library is on the left side of Washington St. From Princeton, go north on Route 206 and turn right onto Route 518. From New Brunswick, proceed south about 10 miles on Route 27 and bear right onto Route 518 shortly after Kendall Park. Drive about three miles to Rocky Hill and turn right at the library.

[ Those using public transportation would need to take a train to Princeton and then the "Dingy" train to downtown Princeton.  Arrangements with us in advance for a pick up from the Dingy station would be necessary as well.  Call or write to the above addresses if that is needed for your attendance. ]
