trentonfamilyspeak3.jpgWe were honored by the participation of the Delgado family.  Talk about a power house.  Two of the Delgado children, Ramon Delgado and Evelyn Delgado all addressed the demonstration and all testified to the board.  Evelyn is in the Woodbridge, NJ district and when she is determined, she carries forward.  This past spring, she walked the streets supporting the budget and campaigning for a special education parent who was vying for a local board seat.  She regularly distributes the NJ Student Advocate newspaper at special education related events.

In Ramon's presentation, he wondered why the districts are not much better at figuring out how to educate children with disabilities alongside their typical peers.  When you have the Delgado's in your court, you have a fighting chance.  Evelyn wrote an article that appears in the Spring issue of the NJ Student Advocate.  You can read it at this link.

trentongroup2.jpgAnother speaker, representing NJ Adapt was Roy Carbone, pictured at right wearing blue in the wheel chair.  Roy related the experiences of many with disabilities going from "institution to institution."   In a recent interview the NJ Student Advocate did with Roy, he responded as follows when asked about special education:

"It is crucial that they have strong special education.  If you don’t start early, by the time you become 25, 30, 40.  Nobody’s going to help them in the workforce.

You’ve got to have a sound foundation.  If you don’t have a sound foundation, you probably are not going to be anything later in life.  You need that sound foundation.trentongroup.jpg

It all comes down to “we don’t have the money, we don’t have the money, we don’t have the money.”   And who suffers, the child suffers.  Nobody suffers but the child."

For the rest of the interview . . .
