The media, including all of the NJ daily newspapers, were notified about the
event repeatedly although the media effort could have been a little better
coordinated. There were two papers represented but only 1 reporter. The
Trentonian had a photographer who took many shots but nothing ran. The
Bergen Record ran a nice article but it
was a bit misleading. While it put us in a positive light though, it gave
the mistaken impression that we were fighting for
issues that we have already gained in our struggle - short term objectives, age
14 for transition services, etc. - when we placed special emphasis
on stay put and manifest determination protections - on discipline issues. We
were clear in our interviews with the reporter of what our focus was, but
she might have been swayed by Barbara Gantwerk that we were still
fighting on issues we already won.
The article put Gantwerk
on record to the changes that we won. In March of 2005 Gantwerk was
quoted in the Trenton Times saying that it was actually parents who wanted to
get rid of Short Term Objectives. Click
