Meeting: What do we as special needs families and our children have to lose if we do
nothing in the face of pending changes in NJ special education law due to IDEIA
2004? What can we do about it? http://studentadvocate-nj.org/IDEIA2004_Petition.htm Brief overview of 11 points of petition and why they are important with questions and answers. We have nearly 500 signatures on the petition to protect the rights of children with disabilities and their parents. We need to develop a strategy to move the petition base from counting by the hundreds into counting by the thousands. Let’s organize all 215,000 NJ special needs families! The petition drive was initiated and has been largely coordinated by APIECE. While many others have participated in promotion and otherwise support for the effort, we want to broaden the participation and ownership of the effort so that we can truly accomplish the goal of mobilizing the entire state around this effort. Hopefully a “committee of petitioners” and a larger base of active promoters of the petition can be galvanized. Activating the Petitioner Base: Those who sign the petition at the website are also volunteering for various tasks including letter writing, further promotion of the petition, to solicit support from their organization etc. A mechanism of phone bankers is needed to organized follow up calls to petitioners to assure that they are following through on their tasks and to see what other efforts they might be willing to support. Ideally we would call the petitioners once a month or every other month. The calls would be brief – unless you decide to talk longer – and the amount of time requested for phone banking would be minimal. The follow up with petitioners needs to be organized.
