Since 2004 our organization, A Parents' Initiative for Every Child's Education (APIECE) has been embroiled in a struggle with the Montgomery Township Board of Education on implementing Black Studies into the curriculum. While we have yet to prevail, we continue to press forward while urging all to take up similar issues in their own communities. So it is at this time that we announce our letter-writing campaign to advocate for maximal implementation of the Amistad Law in our school districts throughout the state of New Jersey. By taking on this effort you would contact your school district, county superintendents if necessary and find out what African American History courses are in place, if any and how such topics are dealt with in the k-12 curriculum.

*All* of our children grades k-12 need to be exposed to African American historical figures, events and history on a grander scale and not just during Black History month. Let's put an end to the marginalization of African Americans and African American History in our schools and textbooks.

We encourage participants in this letter-writing campaign to send Opinion letters to their local newspapers and to call on your colleagues, friends, neighbors, organizations, churches encouraging them to add their support. It is time for us to sensitize our elected school-board officials, school districts and county superintendents. Please keep in mind that each day we do nothing, the further back this issue will fall until it disappears from the radar screen of those with the power to help make a difference. We would like to ask that you share the letters with us by sending them to: apiece@apiecenj.org.

For ideas on writing a sample letter that you can tailor to your own views, or present to your own district 'as is' click the link up at our website at http://apiecenj.org/black_history_in_your_district.htm  . Let's start a movement here in New Jersey to accomplish the same thing throughout our school districts as did Philadelphia where a full year of study of African American History will now be required for high school graduation (Philadelphia school mandate: African history - June 9, 2005).
