Bullying and the Death of
One Who Stood Up to It!
The senseless murder and dismemberment
of Jennifer Parks, a 16 year old of Randolph, NJ whose dismembered body was
discovered by police in a chest as 3 youth attempted to dump the chest into the
Passaic River should send a resounding message to the NJ DOE and to all off the
over 600 districts in New Jersey that efforts to counter bullying throughout
this state need to be more effective and more serious.
Jennifer Parks had a history of being harassed and bothered by other students in
her district and she was brave enough to stand before a school assembly and talk
about being targeted. It is a tragedy that she was ultimately murdered by one of
her tormenters.
This case should serve as a wake up call - an emergency response is needed
across the state to the phenomenon of bullying be the victim a special needs
student or any child who might not fit in for whatever reason.
What is the anti-bullying policy in your district? What happens when a student
is victimized? How do attitudes and actions of teachers and administrators
sometimes encourage the bullying of students? What impact does the bullying have
on the victimized students? We can not afford to wait for another similar
incident to demand effective counter bullying measures.
