Recognizing the Other Costs of
Neglecting Needs of Students with Disabilities
by Rebecca Pruitt stkmrkt@msn.com
We are at a critical juncture, both at the state level and the federal level.
This new law only serves to identify the problems we face as a nation. Do we
truly want freedom for all or only for those who can afford it or advocate on
their own. If we continue to water down the services and education for the
special needs population in this country, the ramifications of such moves will
be felt in spending the money only in different venues, at a higher cost and
over a longer term. We must consider long term care in the form of prisons,
assisted living, drug and alcohol rehab, food stamps, medicaid, and the list
goes on. While many do not make the connection with these life services one
cannot deny statistics that are readily available such as the prison population
in the US is over fifty percent ADHD? An education goes a long way in preventing
future ills that we as a society now face. If we as a nation continue to try and
put everyone in the box we have made acceptable for educational funding
eventually it will explode. This has as much to do with the moral convictions of
a society as it does taxes and where we what we will be giving to our children
to contend with in their lifetime, and it won't single out special needs except
it will be harder on them, on us.
