Responsibility Onto States to
Uphold the Standards Already in Place . . . by
Sarah Clader
The weakening of special
education regulations under the new IDEA puts the responsibility onto states to
uphold the standards which were already in place, and so we must be very careful
not to erode our commitment to New Jersey's most vulnerable young people.
Furthermore, education is traditionally a matter of local and State concern; we
have the right, as well as the responsibility, to maintain our previous
standards for school district accountability and the rights of special ed
students and parents. I am concerned about the impact that the revisions will
have on the lives and learning of students with special needs unless New Jersey
makes a promise to shouldering this new responsibility.
