Text Box: BOB WITANEK
Bob Witanek is a NJ parent of children with disabilities who has taken many initiatives and has helped spearhead a successful statewide effort to improve the implementation of IDEIA 2004 in NJ.  He initiated and coordinated a statewide petition signed by over 2000 NJ parents supporting many important protections in NJ special education code for children with disabilities and their parents.

With 40 other parents, he co-founded The NJ Student Advocacy Union that aims to continue to build a political movement to empower children with disabilities and their families.  He is webmaster of The Student Advocate Website, http://StudentAdvocate-NJ.org , editor of the newspaper The NJ Student Advocate (latest issue: http://www.studentadvocate-nj.org/NJSTUADV001_002.pdf ), has organized parents to testify at state special education hearings and to rally outside those hearings, has organized and promoted a successful benefit concert with most of the performers being children with disabilities and regularly responds to what he calls incidents of “scapegoating” and “backlash” against special education children.  He hopes that special education parents and advocates will recognize the need to organize for political empowerment at the local, statewide and national level, to rival the many powerful organizations and associations that are allied against the rights of our children.
